On December 17, 1830, at the age of forty-seven, Simón Bolívar died after a painful battle with tuberculosis[10] in the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino in Santa Marta, Gran Colombia. His remains were buried in the cathedral of Santa Marta. Twelve years later, in 1842, at the request of President José Antonio Páez, they were moved from Santa Marta to Caracas, where a monument was set up for his interment in the National Pantheon of Venezuela.

Menu of Treats – Colombia
Living In Colombia

When I lived in Colombia, we often spent our weekends touring the countryside. On the way back to Bogotá, if we were coming from the north, we would frequently stop for a snack at a popular roadside stand named San Gerónimo. We would always order fresas con crema (strawberries with cream).

Seventeen years later, on a short visit to Colombia, our first impulse was to tour the countryside again. On our little tour we found a place that sold fresas con crema, so of course I ordered some!

Perhaps the most typically Colombian item on the menu here is crema de curuba. The curuba is a species of passion fruit that is native to the highlands of Colombia. The plant has beautiful pink flowers, which hang on an exuberant vine that can take over an entire wall. I frequently had curuba juice when I lived in Bogotá, always prepared with milk, like a milk shake. The curuba appears to be little known outside of Colombia, but I know of two locations in the San Francisco Bay area of California where I have seen the vine and its beautiful flowers.

Nourishing Colombian Breakfast Soup
Colombia Food

Soup is not a common breakfast food here in America, but it is many other places around the world, including Colombia where I grew up. Serving up a bowl of this delicious soup is still one of the most warming breakfasts in our home. Mr Chiots loved it the first time I made it. There are a few different version, the one from the capital city includes milk and no potatoes. I much prefer the following version from the prairie region that I grew enjoying.
